Mona Island (approximately 42 miles from the mainland) has been named the "Galapagos of the Caribbean". It is a very flat, rocky island (roughly 13,000 acres) sitting in the middle of what is considered one of the roughest passages in the world by mariners. Managed by the Puerto Rican Department of Natural Resources, permits are required for camping / visiting. Mona Island has approximately 5 miles of beautiful white sand beaches!
Desecheo Island The west coast of Puerto Rico is home to one of the healthiest reef systems and the clearest waters in the Caribbean, yet it is virtually unknown as a dive destination. Scuba diving and snorkeling at Desecheo Island boasts 100-150ft visability consistently. The sites here are a wonderful place to practice your underwater photography or just relax and enjoy the scenery! The depths at Desecheo Island range from shallow (beginning at 20-30ft) to deeper, more advanced dives (dropping off to over 100ft). The majority of our sites at Desecheo Island are conducive for all levels of diving, as well as snorkeling opportunities.
The local reefs in Mayaguez are abundant with many different types of hard & soft corals, as well as a wide variety of reef fish and even a stray open water game fish from time to time. These sites are excellent for snorkeling and training dives. Many of the sites begin in about 15-20ft. Snorkelers can find patches of reef in the 10 ft range, while divers can drop off the side of the reef system to a maximum depth of 60ft. The wall system in Cabo Rojo is a pristine environment displaying bushes of black coral, an abundance of fish life and sightings of large turtles, eagle rays and sharks! Visibility here averages 60-80ft. Most diving in this area is considered deep, beginning in about 60ft of water. This area is subject to availability (currents, sea conditions).
